What is NS3 About?
The Naphthalene State-of-the-Science Symposium (NS3) will review four fundamental science issues related to the quantification of human cancer risk from exposure to naphthalene at environmentally relevant levels. Researchers who performed the most important primary scientific studies on metabolism, biochemistry, animal-to-human extrapolation, and mechanism of action will present their work. A review of the literature on human exposure, occupational and environmental epidemiology, and the incidence in humans of nasal epithelial tumors (the specific tumors reported in a recent whole animal bioassay) also will be presented.
Leading independent scientific experts will develop consensus reports on the state-of-the-science. In addition, they will identify significant scientific uncertainties and propose specific, targeted, cost-effective scientific research that would resolve these uncertainties so that human health risk assessment can be maximally informed by science.
The Symposium concludes with preliminary presentations by members of each expert panel and an application of state-of-the-art uncertainty analysis, which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently identified as a high-priority need in human hrealth risk assessment.
